Editor's Review

The most noteworthy aspect of CIBC’s Aventura Visa Infinite is that it allows card holders to collect points towards flights. Aventura points can be used for any airline purchase with no black out dates or seat restrictions. Flight choice is basically unlimited!

Aventura Visa Infinite card holders can fly in style with four free passes to Priority Pass airport lounges per year and free Nexus passes for four years. Priority Pass lounges come with many perks including free wi-fi, showers and comfortable seating. On the other hand, Nexus passes allow you to skip the lines when crossing the US/Canadian borders. Lastly, card holders benefit from emergency travel and mobile device insurance. This type of insurance covers the cost of baggage loss, medical costs, trip cancellation, mobile device loss or stolen coverage, and rental car cancellation, among other coverage. This is a fantastic credit card for those who want to travel comfortably, with little worries, and earn towards their next flight.

Points can be earned on all purchases, but the rate at which points are earned varies slightly. Two Aventura points are earned on every dollar spent on travel through CIBC’s Aventura Rewards Center, one and a half points are earned on every dollar spent on gas, grocery and pharmacy purchases, and one point per dollar spent is earned everywhere else. It’s important to keep these rates in mind to optimize the dollars you spend.

All of this comes with a price tag, a $139 annual fee is applicable to obtain this card. In addition, points can only be redeemed through CIBC’s Aventura Rewards Center. This means that card holders can’t redeem their flight benefits through cheaper portals, such as Hotwire or Expedia. Fortunately, the points never expire and can be used for any cost including extra fees and taxes.

Another limitation of the Aventura Visa Infinite is the redemption of points isn’t always consistent. The amount of points you can redeem is based on where your flight is going which can fluctuate. Furthermore, you need to finance at least 80% of the flight purchase with your Aventura points or purchase the flight with your own funds. Finally, Aventura points cannot be transferred to other loyalty programs which isn’t favourable.

All in all, the Aventura Visa Infinite credit card from CIBC is an excellent choice if you frequently fly and prefer to travel in style. Keep in mind that the benefits of this card have a high cost, but also a high reward. Last, but definitely not least, CIBC is offering a promotional offer of 20,000 Aventura points when you obtain this card and make your first purchase.
