The American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card is the ideal AMEX charge card for families who regularly travel. When you sign up for this card, you’ll receive 15,000 Aeroplan miles once you spend $1,500 over the first three months. Most people have no issues spending that much over three months which makes this sign up bonus particularly easy to obtain. Furthermore, the 15,000 sign up bonus is enough to get you a short haul flight somewhere in North America. A vacation is not far away with this credit card!
American Express® AeroplanPlus Gold cardholders earn one Aeroplan mile point per dollar spent which caps at $10,000 annually. Once the $10,000 cap is met, cardholders earn 1.25 Aeroplan miles per dollar spent. If you use your credit card for daily spending and don’t spend much on day to day items, such as groceries, gas and pharmacy, this is an ideal card for you.
With this card, you will get the best bang for your buck when you redeem your points on flights. Points cannot be used towards fees, taxes and other surcharges, they can only be put towards the cost of the actual flight. This is not ideal, but the points can definitely help you save on flights if you’re a frequent flyer. Another way you can redeem your points is by purchasing gift cards, vacation packages, merchandise, accommodation or car rentals. However, when you spend points on these items, you won’t get as much value. American Express® offers other perks to their customers which includes AMEX Invites, travel insurance, purchase insurance and special invites for exclusive events.
As for disadvantages, this card has an annual fee of $120. While this fee isn’t extraordinarily high, it is never fun to worry about costs. Also, American Express® cards are charge cards which is a fancy way of saying you must pay the balance in full every month. If you don’t, you’ll be faced with high interest immediately. If you don’t pay your balance in full every month, the AeroplanPlus Gold card is not optimal for you.
